Functional Dentistry in Thessaloniki

Bruxism, tooth wear and custom-made night guards.

Sensitivity may be due to gum recession, enamel wear, decay, cracks, bruxism or recent dental work. If it persists or is severe, it needs to be checked.

Bruxism is the clenching or grinding of the teeth, often during sleep. It can cause wear, jaw pain, headaches or sensitivity. In many cases a special night guard, worn during sleep, helps.

A night guard may be recommended when there are signs of intense clenching or grinding, tooth wear, muscle fatigue, pain in the temporomandibular joint or headaches related to tightening of the jaws.

How the assessment is done

Functional dentistry looks at how the teeth, jaws, muscles and temporomandibular joint work together. The examination includes a history (pain, headaches, grinding sounds, sleep, stress), a check of tooth wear, the muscles and the joint and, where needed, X-rays. This establishes whether bruxism or another functional strain is present.

When it is indicated

  • clenching or grinding of the teeth, especially in sleep,
  • tooth wear or repeated chipping and cracks,
  • pain or fatigue in the facial muscles or in the temporomandibular joint,
  • headaches related to tightening of the jaws,
  • sensitivity to cold due to wear or gum recession.

Sensitivity may also be due to decay or cracks, so it needs to be checked if it persists.

Custom-made night guard

In many cases a special night guard, worn during sleep, helps. An impression of the teeth is taken, the night guard is made in the laboratory and fitted to your mouth, so that the bite is comfortable. It does not treat the cause of bruxism, but it protects the teeth and reduces the load. Ready-made guards from the shops do not fit precisely and are not recommended without professional advice.

Treatment of tooth wear

Where damage has already occurred, restoration with composite resin or with more extensive prosthetic restorations may be needed, after the cause has been checked so that the damage does not recur.

When not to wait

Ask for an examination without delay if you have persistent jaw pain, difficulty opening your mouth or the jaw locking, repeated breakage of teeth or fillings, or if your teeth seem to be wearing down and getting shorter. Uncontrolled bruxism can lead to advanced wear and cracks.

Monitoring

After the night guard is delivered, a follow-up is scheduled to see whether the symptoms have subsided and whether the bite remains comfortable. Depending on progress, the dentist may suggest further measures, such as jaw muscle exercises or an assessment by another specialist when sleep disorders are involved.

Duration and care

The night guard is usually worn at night and takes a few days to get used to. It is cleaned daily, kept in its case and checked at regular intervals for wear. Reducing stress, limiting caffeine and alcohol in the evening and relaxation techniques also help.
