Periodontal treatment deals with problems related to the gums and the tissues that support the teeth. Symptoms such as bleeding when brushing, swollen gums, bad breath, gum recession or tooth mobility may need a dental assessment.<\/p><p>Early diagnosis is important, as periodontal problems can progress gradually without severe pain. The treatment approach depends on the severity of the case and may include cleaning, deeper removal of bacterial deposits, oral hygiene instructions and regular re-examination. The patient is informed in detail about the condition of their gums and about the steps needed to maintain periodontal health.<\/p>\n    <div class=\"lav-extra\" data-lav-extra>\n<h2>How the gums are treated, step by step<\/h2>\n<p>We start with an examination of the gums, measurement of the depth of the pockets and X-rays. This is followed by information about the diagnosis, hygiene instructions and scaling, i.e. removal of tartar and plaque. In periodontitis, deeper cleaning (root planing) removes the deposits beneath the gums and smooths the roots. Periodontitis also affects the bone and supporting tissues; treatment aims to stop its progression and preserve the teeth.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Duration and recovery<\/h2>\n<p>Cleaning is often done in sections, with local anaesthesia when needed. Afterwards, mild sensitivity and slight bleeding for a few days are normal. Gentle brushing, soft foods for a few hours and mouthwashes the dentist may recommend help.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Risk factors<\/h2>\n<p>Besides hygiene, smoking, diabetes mellitus, stress, certain medications, hormonal changes and a hereditary predisposition play a role.
